5 Website Terms Explained

Since the boom of the internet, many new phrases and terminology have made their way into the way we speak. For many people, a lot of these terms don’t make sense and some people struggle to understand exactly what they mean.

We have compiled a short list of some of the website terminology that we use in the VIGO offices and we connected them with their definitions – hopefully this will clear some things up for you.

Domain Name / Website Domain

A domain name, or web address, is an address where you can be found online. It is how you will express yourself through email or your website and it’s what customers think of when trying to find you on the internet.

A domain name must be unique and you won’t be able to register a domain that someone else has already registered.

Email accounts can be linked to your domain, making it more professional than using a Gmail or Yahoo email address. Example:

Domain Extension

A domain extension is the suffix at the end of a web address, like .com or

For example, in the domain, .com is the domain extension.

There are various domain extensions to choose from when registering a new domain for your business. Some popular examples include:

South Africa recently received new domain extensions that can be used instead of – these additional domains that can now be registered are:

  • .capetown
  • .durban
  • .joburg
While there are no rules about which domain extensions to use for your website, common sense should always prevail. If your company has an international element, .com will be preferable. If you do business in South Africa only, is more than fine and if you’re in a specific region, .capetown, .durban or .joburg will work well.

Website Hosting

Any website on the internet consists of different files, images and databases that work together to display the content online. These files need to be stores on servers where others can access them, to view the website.

These servers are basically hard-drives that store the website’s files and can be accessed via a website browser like Google Chrome or Internet Explorer (preferably not Internet Explorer).

Without website hosting, nobody would be able to access your website.

Meta Tags

Meta Data, are snippets of data that describe other data. In the web industry, meta data is used for search engine optimization (SEO) to assist search engines like Google, to index and ‘find’ your website.

Meta tags are snippets of text that describe the content on a web page, but the meta tags does not appear on the pages itself, only in the pages’ code.

When using website building software like VIGO, you can insert meta tags like page descriptions and image titles that describe the content of the page, which will help Google to understand and index your content.
